Critique of Transcultural Nursing

Talk about in the case of nursing Is a calling or an occupation. What can present and future medical caretakers do to improve nursing's remaining as a calling? Nursing Is a calling. As indicated by Mencken and Wills (2014) â€Å"profession Is an educated employment or occupation that has a status of predominance and priority inside a Dillon of work† (p. 2). I accept this depicts nursing however required more proof to make my decision.I considered the â€Å"characteristics off calling: a characterized and concentrated information base, control and authority over preparing and instruction, credentialing framework, benevolent support of society, formal preparing inside foundations of advanced education, protracted colonization to the calling and autonomy† (Mencken and Wills, 2014, p. 2). The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (â€Å"NCSA Home,† n. D. Help to characterize the nursing information base, have authority over preparing by necessitating that prepa ration at establishments of advanced education fulfill the guidelines of endorsement by sheets of nursing and that attendants moving on from an affirmed nursing program are clinically capable to work on nursing by allocate the national chamber licenser test (â€Å"UNCLE Examinations,† n. D. ). Nursing at Its center Is a benevolent calling. Unselfishness Is characterized as â€Å"feelings and conduct that demonstrate a craving to support others and an absence of selfishness† (â€Å"Altruism †Merriam-Webster Dictionary,† n. D. ).Medical caretakers give care since it is required and not on the grounds that the attendant will have individual additions from giving such consideration. Self-sufficiency in nursing can be seen as an organization in a multi-disciplinary group in which every ash has an alternate range of abilities and cooperating the patient gets the most ideal consideration. Every part works autonomously and between conditionally to meet the changed and one of a kind needs of every individual patient. Nursing as a calling meets or surpasses every trait of a calling in my view. Experienced medical attendants need to help develop the abilities and basic considering new nurses.Nurses with a wide assortment of encounters and aptitudes are better ready to act independently. At the point when medical attendants think basically and act In a protected manner they give better, mineral effective consideration. This prompts Increased patient fulfillment, Increased doctor, friend and fearlessness. I find that the zone new medical caretakers need the most direction on is his/her capacity to approach information previously picked up to give the best consideration. For instance, knowing which IV size to decide for a patient who has a potential GIG drain is something that the preceptor shows the new nursing graduate.

What NOT to Do on the Medical School Coursework Section

This part of the medical school application can be time consuming since you will have to enter in the title, units, and grade as well as classification for every college level class you’ve ever taken. It’s easy to make mistakes here since there are so many to list. Besides entering in the basic information about each class, you’ll need to specify whether it is a BCPM or AO course. BCPM stands for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Math while AO, means All Other. Medical schools calculate a cumulative, science, and â€Å"all other† GPA that they use in review of your application. As a medical school admissions consultant, I give the med school applicants I work with the following guidelines when they fill out the coursework section of their application: 1. DO NOT leave out courses that were taken for college credit during high school. Even if the class does not appear on your high school transcript, if you received college credit for a class you took in high school, list it in the coursework section of your medical school application. It will make your application look more impressive if you got started on your Bachelor’s Degree before you even graduated from high school. If you do not share all the information as accurately as possible, it could look like you’re trying to hide something. These things have a way of turning up. 2. DO NOT exclude courses taken abroad since they already appear on the official transcript. Even if you took classes at another school as part of an exchange program at your school, list the university where you took the class and received the course credit. Don’t take any shortcuts. If you do everything right the first time, there won’t be any issues. 3. DO NOT enter all coursework in at one time. If you try to complete this section in one sitting, you will likely make silly mistakes. Have patience. Give yourself time to double check your work before adding new information. Plan to complete this section in multiple sessions. I’ve gotten numerous phone calls over the years from medical school applicants, panicked over what they accidentally entered. 4. DO NOT rely on memory. Using your own handwritten notes or an old unofficial copy of your transcripts can be dangerous. Order official copies of your transcripts to make sure that you are up to date on the status of all your coursework and grades. It’s better to correct mistakes or have grades updated before you mail out transcripts. 5. DO NOT list classes as BCPM without careful consideration. Make sure that all classes that should be considered BCPM are and that you double check dates and grades. If you’re not sure whether you should list a class as BCPM or not, read the course description. If you’re still confused, talk to an academic or premed advisor. If all else fails, you can always contact the AAMC. 6. DO NOT guesstimate the unit translation. Be precise. Follow instructions on how to convert your units to hours. Take your time to learn how to do it correctly. Ask for help if you have questions. 7. Take your time! While this may not seem like an important part of the application, the cumulative and science GPAs that are calculated using the information you share will play a major role in how the selection committee views your application. Don’t leave it for the last minute or you’ll risk being sloppy. Pace yourself and make sure you input all information accurately. The Mythic Symbolism the Hobbit - 550 Words

The Mythic Symbolism the Hobbit (Essay Sample) Content: The Mythic Symbolism the Hobbit (Tolkien)Student NameInstitutionMyths are discussed by many but as false stories. Many think that myths only exist in the past, especially in the Greco-Roman world and do not have any influence on the modern world. However, myths are present in the contemporary world and affect the modern man. In the modern world, mythic images consistently create a connection for people. The ancient mythological symbols modern in literature, art in astronomy, and a host of other disciplines move modern man. The modern mythologies, for instance, the American mythology, create and preserve values in the society. The American legends, tales, and stories define peopleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s self-perceptions and desires. People have misappropriated the word myth and equate it to false. However, the truths, which underlie the people's myths are far more accurate than the events that history. This essay will discuss myths based on The Hobbit (Tolkien) and discuss their psychological implications, historical contexts, and world views. The Hobbit is a 1936 childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s story by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. It narrates about a small person who plays a role in a great adventure (Tolkien, 2001). The imagery and the playful tone make the novel suitable for both adults and children. The success of The Hobbit also gave Tolkien a vast public that was anxious to learn more about the methodically established world that he had created his created mythology and language, only a small part of which was through in The Hobbit. The novel is an embodiment of modern use of myths. The character and plot of The Hobbit combine the ancient heroic Scandinavian epics and Anglo-Saxon. In many ways, the charm and humor of the novel lie in relocating a simple, countryside Englishman of the 1930s into a heroic feudal setting. Tolkien accredited that his hero, Bilbo Baggins, was decorative on the rural Englishmen of his own time (Casey, 1977).The psychological implicatio n of myths may be categorized as a representation and a necessary component of the human psyche. As a representation, the most shared belief about the psychological significance of myth is that mythologies embody different elements of humanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s souls or minds (White, 1971).ÂNot only modern writers, but also the ancient writers engage in this interpretation. Greek Aphrodite and Roman goddess Venus, for instance, is possibly the best-known symbol that symbolizes love, especially in its erotic and sometimes romantic aspects (Jewell, 2002). Myth as an essential constituent of the human psyche it a theory believes that myth is a significant part of the human psyche. Human being needs myth in their lives to live an ordinary functional existence. For instance, the dissimilarities among Tolkienà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s fictional races are a critical focus of the novel, predominantly in its second half. Dwarves, elves, goblins, and trolls differ from one another psychologically, morally, and physically. This shows that humans are hereditarily programmed to think in story form. Stories are how humans remember the significant events in their lives, how they remember world events the best, and how they understand meaning in the lives of people around them (Jewell, 2002).According to Fimi (2009), race and fairness are the points on the historical continuum Tolkien takes into standpoint. This gives the myths in The Hobbit a historical context. The Tolkienà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s The Hobbit creativity as his legendary developments from mythology of Anglo-Saxon for England to a more realistic pseudo-history of a proto-historic period of Europe, as a reaction to his historical realism. The time, the author, lived, affects his writing. The Downfall Of Julius Caesar Essay - 1950 Words

The years after the murder of Gaius Julius Caesar were among the most turbulent and uncertain times Rome had ever faced. With both Octavian and Marc Antony vying for the throne, a bloody civil war was unfolding. However, from those trying times emerged a reborn Rome, with Augustus Caesar, the First Emperor of Rome, at the helm. While the Republic was no more, Augustus as the sole ruler of the Roman empire ushered in a new age, one of morality, renewed religious practices, architecture, and most importantly, of the humanities. Legendary poets such as Vergil, Horace, and Ovid flourished under the rule of Augustus, and penned the magnificent works that the age is known for. However, one man, Titus Livius, decided not to write epic poetry, but to write the entire history of Rome in 142 books instead. Livy, the first of Rome’s three great historians, lived from 59 BCE to 17 CE, through the civil war and through the entirety of Augustus’s reign. Livy was a scholar, therefore he must have recognized his era to be a new beginning for Rome, and thus a perfect time to write a history of his beloved country. Though few of the original 142 books of Ab Urbe Condita survive today, what remains describes not only Rome, but the character of Livy himself, a mysterious man whose personal writings have not survived. Although nothing is for certain, Ab Urbe Condita allows bits and pieces of Livy to shine through, displaying his political, social, and religious beliefs, as well as his viewsShow MoreRelatedThe Downfall Of Julius Caesar1795 Words   |  8 Pagespeople. This section together with the tips in the following section will help you make the most of public reviews. Customers value transparency they trust each other Studies have repeatedly shown how customers value transparency. Since an increasing amount of shopping now happens online, customers have a limited ability to check the product or service prior to the buying decision. The ability to read real life experiences of the product will naturally provide the consumer a ‘second-hand’ experience and give valuable insight into the product. As we mentioned above, above 60% of consumers prefer websites, which have customer reviews. Reviews aren’t only important in the retail business either. In a TripAdvisor study, over half of the respondents said they wouldn’t book a stay in a hotel with no reviews. Websites that don’t show reviews are considered less informative. Gandhi clarifies the issue of equal rights to gain education as the world turns a cold shoulder on this issue: ‘it should be an intrinsic part of any strategy to address the gender based: ‘Discrimination against women and girls those remain prevalent in many societies. ’ Using anecdote, Gandhi reminds the people that women, even at a young age when they’re still girls, have to remain hidden and cannot be on their own, as if they can’t walk on their own. This can be identified as anecdote because she’s using a story of her childhood to better explain a point she’s trying to make. Realities of homelessness Essay Example For Students

Realities of homelessness Essay For many, the term homeless conjures up an image of middle-aged alcoholic and unemployable males sleeping on park benches, in doorways, and on sidewalks. The reality, however, is homelessness affects all of our humanity. Families are homeless. Many babies go from the hospital into the shelter system, never knowing what it is like to go home. Women are another subgroup of the homeless. Individuals with mental illness, alcohol or drug addictions are homeless. The elderly are homeless. The disabled are homeless. The number of homeless Americans is large and growing larger. The exact number is unknown, but estimates range from 250,000 to over 3 million people. One factor that contributes to homelessness is lack of affordable and decent housing. In the late 1970s, Phoenix demolished 4000 inexpensive hotel rooms in the downtown area that were occupied by people who could not affort other housing. What happened to those people? Where did they go to live? A guess would be, on the street. An estimated 25 to 50% of the homeless are thought to suffer from serious and chronic forms of mental illness. Social Issues .

Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio Essay Example

Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio Paper Rizal was phenomenonal. He earned his first degree at 16 in the Philippines and never looked back. At 18 he ran away to Europe and earned a medical degree in Spain, and followed it up with degrees in France. While in Europe and in many in other countries during his travels around the world, he taught himself fluency in Spanish, German, English, and French and he did it all in a short 35 years of life. From childhood, he was a prolific writer and he remained so right up until minutes before being a martyr. Rizal’s reputation as a hero is well earned. He hated how the Spanish treated the natives of the Philippines, whom the Spanish called Indios. The novels and essays he wrote were aimed mostly at Spaniards back in Spain. His objective was to get them to stop the practices of Spanish friars and governors in colonial Philippines. I believe he was convinced that if the Spaniards in Europe knew of the cruelty and injustice going on in their colony for years, that they would finally interfere and stop the merciless brutality that had gone on for centuries. In Spain, Spaniards treated Rizal with respect and admiration, but for some reason the Spaniards in the Philippines were entirely different. They did not hesitate to use torture, terror and execution to keep their Indios under their complete control, and that included controlling Rizal as well. Spanish priests who were called friars, who called the shots in his home land. after years away, he returned to Manila and almost immediately the friars found a means to get him out of the way. Jose was found guilty and exiled hundreds of miles away to the very fringes of the archipelago to the tiny town of Dapitan on Mindanao. He spent years there, and during the end of that time, a man named Bonifacio back in Manila put together the beginnings of a major revolt against Spain. Andres Bonifacio was captivating. Although he didn’t have the natural genius of Rizal, he was an incredible fellow just the same. He came from nothing and taught himself everything. The fact that he was poor, self-taught, and self-made, a man who could not afford any formal schooling, much less college, and yet excelled as a leader and independent thinker, he is great. I more I learn about Bonifacio the more I realize that this guy is a perfect form of an authentic Filipino. He has more in common with the bulk of the population here than most any other figure from this country’s past. He was born and raised in Tondo, a very poor place in the mid 19th century, and even more so now. He was dirt poor and suffered through the same troubles and problems that most Filipinos suffer today. Yet he overcame all those issues and became known as Supremo, the leader of the revolutionary government against Spain. Unlike Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio hated the Spanish and wanted nothing to do with them. Where Rizal wanted justice under the rule of Spain, Bonifacio wanted only Filipinos to be dominant over his own island. Also, Bonifacio was instrumental in writing the Katipunan, the guiding document of this country’s first home-grown government. despite no formal education, Andres managed almost single-handedly to spark THE most successful insurrection ever against Spain—and going back hundreds of years, there were scores of revolts and uprisings, all horribly crushed into bloody oblivion. His rebellion was so successful that today we call it The Philippine Revolution. Also, Bonifacio was instrumental in writing the Katipunan, the guiding document of this country’s first home-grown government.

European Works Councils Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

European Works Councils - Essay Example Employers' and personnel' organizations be supposed to play an lively role at a variety of levels in order to hold up the meeting on decent work (Philippe Egger, 2003). During the not on time 19th and earlier 20th centuries manufacturing democratic system was a concept included in the ideological constituent of the manufacturing and following growth of labour actions all through Europe. In spirit and in put into practice it come about throughout and following the 2nd World War as a practical and provisional organisational agreement, which was only aiming to add to manufacture (de Grauwe, P, 2002, 693-718). This research focused on this truth that the European Works Council (EWC) Instruction in 1994 was seen as a important development inside European manufacturing family members and the result of thorough political negotiations. The query of worker contribution had forever been middle to the ambitions of the European Union's (EU) social measurement but important steps had been almost absent since the Agreement of Rome in 1957. The ultimate Directive required transnational companies (TNCs) inside the EU to expand exact organization and structures of cross-border discussion with their workers (see the foreword to this text). It responded to an continuing anxiety inside the worldwide labour group with regard to the directive of novel forms of worldwide assets. Furthermore, the long-term prospect of the deal union group, and certainly the European Commission, up-and-coming from the EWC Instruction are consequently far attainment. Investigate inside this complex area of manufacturing family members straddles the matters of financial and following meeting in the EU, the altering policies of TNCs, the moribund significance of nationwide sectoral communal bargaining preparations and the institutional and following difficulty of European trade amalgamations. Moreover, these wide areas of investigate are now life form additional explored subsequent the completion of the EWC Instruction and the tackle the new structure pretense for the European labour association. Coming to firm finished with look upon to these growths is clearly unwise at this near the beginning period (Hughes Hallett, A.J., Ma. Y., Demertzis, M, 2000, 141-55). In the '80s, a more traditional government with its alteration to the service Act 1982, supported unpaid participation rather than contribution through legislated force. In 1994, after more than a few additional commands, the EU adopted the European Works Councils Instruction require the organization of European-wide Works Council in corporations with more than 1,000 workers in service in two or additional associate states. European Work Councils The self-governing deficit in the EU has many sources; not smallest amount of which is the impotence of the European Parliament. The European Parliament is the merely body inside the Union that is in a straight line elected, and consequently the only of the institution that

Critically examine and compare the elitist, pluralist and the Marxist Assignment

Critically examine and compare the elitist, pluralist and the Marxist theories of the state. Pick a position and argue which theory you think best depicts the reality power of political power as is - Assignment Example In this case, the state is as a result is not subjugated by one class- the ruling class or the bourgeoisie- as seen in the Marxist theory. According to Dunleavy & OLeary (2000), the state is influenced by varying factors, and the interests of the existing groups in the society can be effortlessly attained. In addition, the centers of power according to the Pluralists are not centered on one sphere, and that monopoly of power does not exist in a Pluralist state. In as much the ruling class is seemingly strong and powerful, they have no complete control over the working class, and that the rulers are allowed to come up with labor unions that are strong and vocal to champion for the rights of the proletariats. In turn, the working class is able to exert their influence on the capitalists as evident in the work of Dunleavy & OLeary (2000). Modernity, according to the Pluralists, is the ability of one class not exerting their influence on the weak/ ruled in the society (Dunleavy & OLeary, 2000). In such a case, Shively (2002) indicates that the interests of various social groupings in the society are met and fulfilled by the rulers. Trade unions are for that reason functional and can exert considerable influence on the ruling class. As seen in the work compiled by Garner, Ferdinand & Lawson (2012), the Marxist theory indicates that the ruling group in the social order determines and controls power. The bourgeoisie, commonly known as the ruling class, majorly depends on the levies that are imposed on the proletariats- the ruled. On a lighter note, it is palpable that in some states the bourgeoisie have power over the media; thus, making it easier for the rulers to control what is aired and conveyed to the ruled (Garner, Ferdinand & Lawson, 2012). Conversely, this creates a situation whereby the rulers benefit from continuity in power at the expense of the ‘holders of the state.’ Garner, Ferdinand & Lawson (2012) emphasize that the bourgeoisie class

Statistics for Management Essay Example for Free

Statistics for Management Essay Q1. Define â€Å"Statistics†. What are the functions of Statistics? Distinguish between Primary data and Secondary data. Answer: Statistics: Statistics as a discipline is considered indispensable in almost all spheres of human knowledge. There is hardly any branch of study which does not use statistics. Scientific, social and economic studies use statistics in one form or another. These disciplines make-use of observations, facts and figures, enquiries and experiments etc. using statistics and statistical methods. Statistics studies almost all aspects in an enquiry. It mainly aims at simplifying the complexity of information collected in an enquiry. It presents data in asimplified form as to make them intelligible. It analyses data and facilitates drawal of conclusions. Important functions of statistics: Presents facts in simple form: Statistics presents facts and figures in a definite form. That makes the statement logical andconvincing than mere description. It condenses the whole mass of figures into a singlefigure. This makes the problem intelligible. Reduces the Complexity of data: Statistics simplifies the complexity of data. The raw data are unintelligible. We make themsimple and intelligible by using different statistical measures. Some such commonly usedmeasures are graphs, averages, dispersions, skewness, kurtosis, correlation and regressionetc. These measures help in interpretation and drawing inferences. Therefore, statisticsenables to enlarge the horizon of ones knowledge. Facilitates comparison: Comparison between different sets of observation is an important function of statistics. Comparison is necessary to draw conclusions as Professor Boddington rightly points out.† the object of statistics is to enable comparison between past and present results to ascertaint he reasons for changes, which have taken place and the effect of such changes in future. Soto determine the efficiency of any measure comparison is necessary. Statistical devices likeaverages, ratios, coefficients etc. are used for the purpose of comparison. Testing hypothesis: Formulating and testing of hypothesis is an important function of statistics. This helps indeveloping new theories. So statistics examines the truth and helps in innovating new ideas. Formulation of Policies: Statistics helps in formulating plans and policies in different fields. Statistical analysis of data forms the beginning of policy formulations. Hence, statistics is essential for planners, economists, scientists and administrators to prepare different plans and programmes. Forecasting: The future is uncertain. Statistics helps in forecasting the trend and tendencies. Statisticaltechniques are used for predicting the future values of a variable. For example a producerforecasts his future production on the basis of the present demand conditions and his pastexperiences. Similarly, the planners can forecast the future population etc. considering thepresent population trends. Derives valid inferences: Statistical methods mainly aim at deriving inferences from an e nquiry. Statistical techniques are often used by scholars’ planners and scientists to evaluate different projects. These techniques are also used to draw inferences regarding population parameters on the basis of sample information. Statistics is very helpful in the field of business, research, Education etc., some of the uses of Statistics are: Statistics helps in providing a better understanding and exact description of aphenomenon of nature. Statistics helps in proper and efficient planning of a statistical inquiry in any field of study. Statistical helps in collecting an appropriate quantitative data. Statistics helps in presenting complex data in a suitable tabular, diagrammatic andgraphic form for any easy and comprehension of the data. Statistics helps in understanding the nature and pattern of variability of aphenomenon through quantitative observations. Statistics helps in drawing valid inference, along with a measure of their reliability about the population parameters from the sample data. Any statistical data can be classified under two categories depending upon the sources utilized. These categories are, 1. Primary data 2. Secondary data Primary Data: Primary data is the one, which is collected by the investigator himself for the purpose of aspecific inquiry or study. Such data is original in character and is generated by surveyconducted by individuals or research institution or any organisation. 1.The collection of data by the method of personal survey is possible only if thearea covered by the investigator is small. Collection of data by sending theenumerator is bound to be expensive. Care should be taken twice that theenumerator record correct information provided by the informants. 2.Collection of primary data by framing a schedules or distributing and collecting questionnaires by post is less expensive and can be completed in shorter time. 3.Suppose the questions are embarrassing or of complicated nature or the questionsprobe into personnel affairs of individuals, then the schedules may not be filledwith accurate and correct information and hence this method is unsuitable 4.The information collected for primary data is mere reliable than those collectedfrom the secondary data.Importance of Primary data cannot be neglected. A research can be conducted withoutsecondary data but a research based on only secondary data is least reliable and may have biasesbecause secondary data has already been manipulated by human beings. In statistical surveys it isnecessary to get information from primary sources and work on primary data: for example, thestatistical records of female population in a country cannot be based on newspaper, magazine and other printed sources. One such sources are old and secondly they contain limitedinformation as well as they can be misleading and biased. Secondary Data: Secondary data are those data which have been already collected and analysed bysome earlier agency for its own use; and later the same data are used by a different agency. According to W.A.Neiswanger, ‘ A primary source is a publication in which the data are published by the same authority which gathered and analysed them. A secondary source is apublication, reporting the data which have been gathered by other authorities and for which others are responsible’. 1.Secondary data is cheap to obtain. Many government publications are relatively cheapand libraries stock quantities of secondary data produced by the government, bycompanies and other organizations. 2.Large quantities of secondary data can be got through internet. 3.Much of the secondary data available has been collected for many years and therefore itcan be used to plot trends. 4.Secondary data is of value to: The government help in making decisions and planning future policy. Business and industry in areas such as marketing, and sales in order to appreciate the general economic and social conditions and to provide information on competitors. Research organizations by providing social, economical and industrial information. Secondary data can be less valid but its importance is still there. Sometimes it is difficult toobtain primary data; in these cases getting information from secondary sources is easier andpossible. Sometimes primary data does not exist in such situation one has to confine the researchon secondary data. Sometimes primary data is present but the respondents are not willing toreveal it in such case too secondary data can suffice: for example, if the research is on thepsychology of transsexuals first it is difficult to find out transsexuals and second they may not bewilling to give information you want for your research, so you can collect data from books orother published sources.

Noahs Ark vs. Jurassic Park :: Biology Essays Research Papers

Noah's Ark vs. Jurassic Park As the human population of the world continues to increase the flora and fauna of the planet are becoming an increasingly smaller part of the picture. Environmentalist and conservationists all over the globe are working hard to find strategies and methods for the preservation of disappearing creatures and species. An increasingly popular idea that would allow for great benefits in the field of conservation became apparent in 1996 with the cloning of sheep by the name of Dolly. Since then the scientific debate on the relationship between cloning and conservation has ensued. Although the answer to that question remains on the horizon, cloning for helping endangered species is a process that may become a frequent procedure in the future. When one thinks of cloning generally the first idea that pops into your mind is a large tube filled with some creature attached to a lot of tubes. Cloning actually, is a much more complicated and difficult process. Cloning, scientifically defined is, "asexual reproduction or as the creation of genetically identical individuals" (1). In the cloning process the DNA of one individual creature is "copied" into the cell, or embryo, of another and then that embryo develops into a baby and proceeds down the process of birth and embryological development. Currently, many scientists believe that if the DNA of endangered species is rescued and preserved that the DNA of that species could undergo the cloning process and thus produce a clone of that species. The results of this cloning process would be enormous or it "will open a new front in the battle to preserve the Earth's biodiversity by cloning endangered gorillas, tigers and other rare species" (2). Cloning of endangered species would be a monumental achievement for the scientific community. Many people when they think of cloning picture sometime weird science fiction creature in a test but in real life the idea of cloning could be a valuable tool for the environmental community and it would be a process could vastly improve the current situation of endangered species. Part of the reason why the cloning process is so highly revered is because of the level of complexity and the multiple details that must develop accordingly for the process to work. Robert P. Lanza says, "It is a deceptively simple-looking process. A needle jabs through the protective layer surrounding an egg. A research assistant sucks out the egg's nucleus, which contains the majority of a cell's genetic material, leaving behind only a sac of gel called cytoplasm.

Muslim Stereotypes in the Media Essay

The media over exaggerates their representation of the Muslim population portraying them as violent terrorists and a threat to most nations/countries. Stereotypes abound in any and every form of media we can listen to, read, or watch today. Stereotypes create recognition in people and stir emotions – from anger to fear, or even empathy. News reports on religion generally use outrageous stereotypes of the population of the particular religion. This is evident in the representation of Muslims whenever they pop-up in news stories. Our views and opinions are often shaped by the media – the news, TV shows, movies, magazines and newspapers. Many people take the views depicted in these and claim them as their own without thinking or researching it more. Cultural Theorist Stuart Hall states that the messages in media, â€Å"intersect with the deep semantic codes of a culture and take on additional, more active ideological dimensions.† This means that they build on the cultural and social anxieties of a given time and also reflect then back into the culture, therefore reinforcing them and adding to them. The problem with this is that the media almost always leaves bits and pieces out and portray only the parts they think we want to see to meet our expectations. The kids movie, â€Å"Aladdin† is one which given a skewed view of Muslim people. In the opening scenes of the theatrical release, the theme song states that Aladdin hails â€Å"from a faraway place, where the caravan camels roam, where they cut off your ear if they don’t like your face. It’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home.† Throughout the movie Muslims are repeatedly depicted as scheming, mystical, violent, stupid or greedy Arabs. Everything from costuming to voice tones, facial features and references to Allah build a very stereotypical and false image of Muslims. One of the reasons why this is an incorrect stereotype is that most Muslims are not even Arabic with only about 18% of the 1.6 billion Muslims being Arabic. So why do we as westerners make this assumption that all Muslims are Arabic? I think this is because we don’t look into the figures and information for ourselves we just assume that these negative stereotypes are the truth and by doing this it has become our reality. In the case of Aladdin, this fairytale is viewed by children from such a young age that it becomes a part of their subconscious without them even realizing they have been fed a stereotype. More modern TV shows such as â€Å"Homeland† represent Muslims as fanatic Arab terrorists posing a threat to countries and nations around the world. This is mainly a western representation and is a typical negative stereotype of Muslims that most people believe and accept as the truth. Although this may be an accurate representation of a small minority of the Muslim population, in my opinion this is a false stereotype of the majority of the population. The media has generalised their opinion based on a small minority to all of the Muslim population and sensationalized it to heighten cultural anxieties. This opinion and stereotype has caused much tension between westerners and the general Muslim population in the past and the present. The media reports involving Muslims and Islam in general have become more frequent, with the racist, stereotype images and remarks becoming more and more accepted as normal, especially in the news, entertainment and social media. The media has been targeting religion and more specifically Islam since the events of the 9/11 planted a seed of fear for terrorists and religion in general. Media including Hollywood and the filmmakers have become worse in their racist opinions of Muslims portraying them more and more as brutal, heartless, uncivilised religious fanatics and money-mad cultural â€Å"others† bent on terrorising civilised Westerners. Perhaps it is time that the media realizes that instead of investing in negative stereotypes, there is a positive impact which can be obtained by using counter-stereotypical fictional depictions to turn the tide on societies prejudicial attitudes. religionandmediacourse.blogspot.com.au/2010/11/representations-of-islam-in-media.htm maddysreligionandspirituality.blogspot.com.au/2013/05/week-9-10-religious-racism-and-media.html asiainstitute.unimelb.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/571625/akbarzadeh-islam-media.pdf mediasmarts.ca/diversity-media/religion/media-portrayals-religion-islam teachmideast.org/essays/26-stereotypes/38-stereotypes-of-arabs-middle-easterners-and-muslims http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2012/oct/13/homeland-drama-offensive-portrayal-islam-arabs http://racerelations.about.com/od/hollywood/a/5-Common-Arab-Stereotypes-In-Television-And-Film.htm http://srambeau.wordpress.com/2010/10/15/representations-of-arabs-in-disneys-aladdin/ http://www.theguardian.com/media/2007/jan/25/broadcasting.race
